Every bred egg carries a small chance to come out mutated. On regular cakes that chance sits at about 1%. Switch to the Extravagant Vegetable Cake and it rises to about 3% — three times the odds, which is why that cake is the mutation-hunter's tool. What a mutation actually gives you
What actually hatches from a mutated egg is worth the grind: 90-100 IVs, Alpha status, two to four "rainbow" passives, higher-level skills, and a random +2 to a work suitability. That's a Pal that outclasses a normal breed on every axis at once, which is why endgame breeders run Extravagant Vegetable Cake and accept the 1-3% as a long game rather than a quick win. The cake itself doesn't push the rate any higher than that — its real benefit is producing 2 eggs per cycle instead of 1, so you burn through attempts faster rather than each attempt being more likely to hit. The Mushroom Cake is a different tool entirely: it improves IV quality on your breeds, not mutation odds, so don't expect it to stack with the Extravagant cake for a bigger chance.
A rumor worth dropping
One claim to retire: rainbow passives from a mutation do not negate World Tree radiation. That idea conflates three separate systems — mutation rainbow passives, the distinct "World Tree Passive Skills" found on Pals native to that biome, and the physical Corrosive Mist Mask you craft to survive the region's toxic mist. They don't interact. Craft the mask regardless of what you breed; no passive substitutes for it. Either way, don't start mutation hunting until your cake supply runs itself — at 1-3% per egg, you'll burn through a lot of attempts.
